The Onboarding Gap: why new starters disengage before they’ve even settled in

It’s scary how many people’s onboarding can be summarised as being shown their desk, access card, the kitchen and toilets. Gallup research has found that 1 in 5 employees had a poor or non-existent onboarding.

Cast your mind back to day one, how would you rate your onboarding experience?

Considering 13% of new hires in Australia leave while still on probation (ELMO), onboarding is a critical step to get right.

The best ones I’ve seen and been part of building set the new starter up for success with:

  • Meetings with critical stakeholders, to navigate the system and understand how we will work together.

  • Walking the sales journey, to understand how we make money and stay in business.

  • Sitting-in on the customer journey touch points, from call centres to retail outlets, to see exactly what our customers experience.

  • Time with the team, manager and a culture buddy.

  • Self-guided time to read all the team and role related materials, explore the internal online world and set up personalised systems.

A manager who owns the process, a solid Word template and good coordination of diaries go a long way.

The data backs it up. Employees with a manager invested in their onboarding are 3.4x more likely to rate their onboarding as exceptional (Gallup). 69% of employees are more likely to stay three years if they had great onboarding (SHRM).
